I'm still developing my "twitter response philosophy". I read so many things, "do this", "don't do this" and often times they conflict with the previous.

I tend to respond to everyone unless it looks like an automatic message and I also tend to thank people for R/T (although I'm still up in the air on the latter).

What bothers me lately is people who DM but when I go to DM them back I can't because they are not following me. It's not that I expect people to follow me; actually, I guess I do if they are going to DM. Otherwise, how do I keep up a "private" conversation. Anyway, you get the idea.

Thanks for sharing your philosophy.

Jennifer, I saw a blurb in the September issue of Black Enterprise magazine that mentioned the MommyToo Ning site. So I joined, checkout out the MommyToo mag, and then clicked the Follow me on Twitter link. Then of course I saw your post that directed me here.

When people decide to follow me, even though I don't know why they are, I think it's nice of them. I have an autoresponder that thanks them and mentions my name and my blog if they want to visit. I do not automatically follow everyone who follows me, but I do reply to DMs. I agree with you-- I think it's rude to not reply to a legitimate message, but I admit it took me a few months to get the hang of DMs and even to learn how to get them sent to my phone :)

I am still new to Twitter and sorting out what I prefer from other twitterers. Caught on quickly to the spam, porn and bot people. I am now at a point where I need to cultivate my network. I've got people who follow me, but the question is why? ...and are they someone I want to follow. What's the benefit to follow everyone that follows you?
