1. How and when did you become a Geek Girl?
I was born a geek girl in 1987. It started with books. Sci-fi and mystery books to be exact. Any book that would take me to another world, show me something new, or had a good puzzle in the mix was perfect for my beginning geekness. Then I found out about MP3 CD players, which sparked my love affair with gadgets that have mastered the latest technology. Once the internet hit, it was a wrap and here we are today.
2. Technology is so big, so diverse: in what parts are you an expert? in what realms are you still learning?
I’m well known as an expert in social media, blogging, mobile applications, and using the internet to find the best deals when shopping. I’m learning more about web and graphic design.
3. Did you have an experience growing up or as an adult where you felt the huge divide between women and technology?
I’ve always felt there was a huge divide between women and technology. Growing up I was probably the only person I knew that was beyond obsessed with technology. My Computer Science classes in college only served to drive this point home when it came to women and technology. Out of a class of 20 only 5 were women, myself included.
4. If you answered yes, how did you handle it?
There isn’t too much I feel can be done to handle this situation except by going out there and educating other women ourselves. So that’s what I’ve proceeded to do with all of my friends. I walk them through troubleshooting common problems such as with their internet connection. I’ve also given them tips on how to use Google to find solutions to their problems too.
5. What was your favorite part of Geek Girl Camp 2009?
6. List 3 ways that women (or you specifically) can have an impact on technology.
The first way we can impact technology is by being vocal. No matter what the issue is, we should first and foremost use the technology available to voice our concerns and personal solutions for problems. The second way we can impact technology is by networking with other women who are supporting solutions to our problems. Starting support groups and networking in our field is beyond important to getting our problems resolved by people who actually care and have experienced some of the problems we encounter. The third way we can impact technology is simple: help a sister out! Stop standing behind the spotlight and get out there! Encourage others to do the same. What’s a solution if no one knows about it?
7. If you could change one thing about the world (and we know you can) what would it be?
I’d change the way children are being educated today. It would be too long to explain so we’ll just leave it at that.
8. What is your desire, wish or goal for Geek Girl Camp 2010?
To make a difference and have fun doing it!
9. If the Geek Girls could have 1 minute to talk to the world, what would we say?
WE RULE!
