The Art of Giving Back and Paying it Forward

Last night was truly one of those evenings where it feels so good it hurts. When you are hungover with happiness. When the energy in the room is as thick as thieves.

We celebrated many things last night at the Social Networking | Networking Social event last night.

Here is a condensed version on what happened:

We met incredible people for the first time and learned about what they do and what they are passionate about.

We were supported by those who have been by our side for two years who always knew we would succeed.

We thanked all of sponsors who have been so invaluable to us over the past years.

We gave 3 repurposed laptops from our Laptop Donation Program to WE CAN to use for women in transition and help them get a job and back into school.

We announced our first ever Extreme Geek Makeover contest for a non-profit and awarded it to the Cape Cod Center for Women in hopes we can get them up and going with some tech assistance that they so desperately need.

We donated 5 scholarships ($625) to young girls in the highly successful JR. TECH program to get them involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).

We donated 3 – $1,500 scholarships – $4,500 in all- to our Educational Scholarship partner, ABWA Cape Cod so women who need a helping hand can get ahead on their education.

We thanked all of our volunteers with some awesome gifts from our sponsors like O’Reilly Media, Cape Cod Beer and Best Buy.

Heather Jackson did the “Monkey Dance”.

We paid tribute to all of the Geek Girls who stood by me in this crazy pink and fuzzy dream that started two years ago.

We handed out to the attendees a book called “Greater Than Yourself” by Steve Farber and made everyone promise one thing: that in accepting the book, they must choose one person to initiate a GTY Project of unselfishness by choosing someone to mentor and post a blog post to the Geek Girl site. I expect some incredible stories soon…

We laughed. We cried. We called our mothers.

There was not a dry eye in the house last night due to all the unselfish actions of a community of people who truly believe in collaboration, but also who are genuinely committed to “giving back and paying it forward”.

And if you don’t get the idea of giving back and paying it forward, then you’ll never understand why we are so passionate about what we do, and why the concept of what we do is growing in scope all over the globe.

We urge you to join with us, collaborate and share our vision.

It doesn’t take a village. It just takes one person. I hope that one person is you.

Leave us a message below if you like this post, love our concept, and want to learn how you can get involved.

Leslie, you and GGC should truly savor what you have accomplished. What I alone have learned, read and done because of GGC is significant but to multiply that by the hundreds of women who have participated is monumental! Congratulations on a job well done!!

Steve Farber's “Greater Than Yourself” truly encompases the heart of Geek Girl Camp and is exactly why I have been involved since the inception of Leslie's brilliant and selfless idea!
