Set the Default Application for filetypes

Want to change the default application for a particular filetype so you can double-click the file’s icon to open documents in Pages instead of MS Word? Or open .html files in Dreamweaver for easy editing? Try this easy tip to save time and frustration. Find the type of file that you want to set the default application for in your Finder. Get Moving!

Sitting in front of a computer all day can be bad for your health: there are many studies showing the impact of eyestrain, poor posture, strain from repetitive typing, not to mention sitting stationary for 8+ hours each day. So use technology to get moving and improve your health. Into running? How about yoga? Just want to watch what you eat? Protect Your Files With Dropbox

Recently, I’ve had a few people ask me about file storage and backup options. You should be backing up your computer on a regular basis (more about that in another post) but a great alternative to storing your files on your desktop or an external hard drive is online file storage. A service such as Dropbox is a free* solution for backing up your files AND syncing them across multiple computers. Access your files from your computer, or anywhere by logging into your Dropbox account online. There’s even Dropbox apps for the iPhone, Blackberry, and Droid so you can view….

Receive an email from a friend claiming to be stuck in a foreign country and….

Just a nibble…

You’ve probably heard about bytes, and maybe even bits, but did you know there’s a unit of digital memory called the nibble? The more common byte is made up of 8 bits. A nibble (in English, considered a ‘small bite’) is made up of 4 bits. Learn more about Nibble on Wikipedia.

Mac Screenshot Shortcut

Want to take a screenshot of just one part of your screen? From any application, use the keyboard shortcut of Cmd + Shift + 4 to get a crosshairs icon. Click and drag a box around the area you want to capture and a .png file will be saved to your desktop (named Picture 1.png, Picture 2.png, and so on).

Apps for Smart Shopping

Comparison shop to save time and money: use an app such as Red Laser (Red Laser at iTunes App Store) or Shop Savvy Barcode Scanner (Shop Savvy Barcode Scanner at iTunes App Store)  to scan an item at a store and compare prices and availability across local and online stores.
