Bada Bing, Wave and "The Curse Heard Round the Globe", and Recent Other Geeky News

I read a lot of online news.  A ton. RSS feeds, Twitter feeds, news blogs, Google Alerts showing me new stuff; it never ends. Some of the things I really went nuts over this past week had to do with two new applications from Google and Microsoft as well as something I am still trying to swish around in my brain to fully understand that has something to do briefly with women in tech. Bing I of course am speaking of the new search engine just released from Microsoft known as “Bing“, a much nicer and more stylish search engine….

Geek Girls Give Back! Over 3K in Scholarship Money Donated

At our recent “Networking Social | Social Networking” Event on Tuesday night, I was so happy to hand out 2 $1,500 checks to two very worthy women’s scholarship organizations from some of the proceeds we made from our very successful “Tech Boot Camps”; Cape Cod 2009 and Boston/South Shore 2009. The recipients are the American Business Women’s Association Cape Cod Chapter (ABWA Cape Cod) and the South Shore Women’s Business Network Educational Foundation (SSWBN Ed. Fund).  Both were in attendance at last Tuesday’s events and both ladies who serve as their organization’s president seemed quite shocked, but very excited. That….

Friends don't let friends use IE6…

Are you using Internet Explorer 6 as a Browser for your Internet searches? Then repeat after me: I (state your name) have a problem. I need help. I am powerless to this faulty browser and need an intervention ASAP. Okay now then. Admitting you have a problem is the first step. Now we can make the Internet a better place by replacing your browser with Firefox or another browser. I can hear some of you say, “Well, why?” Yes, grasshopper, I shall tell you and then you too will abandon this albatross around the necks of web developers and websites….

OMG – John Tesh just tweeted me…

So, my typical day consists of many hours online either blogging, tweeting, Facebooking, LinkingIn, you name it. At the speed of light. Because I am impulsive that way. I have very little time to get things done and too many things to do. Which is why I really love Twitter. Now, before you say, “Oh God, not another blog on Twitter…”, wait. I am just going to show you how things happen on Twitter that could never happen anywhere else. Short and sweet. The other thing you must know about me is that I am totally random. ADD-like random. Rain….

How to take a hit on your personal/company brand and come out on top

The other day on Twitter, I was following a friend who tweeted about a new contest service a web applications company made for a well known hotel chain. Because my day job involves running a web applications company that creates successful web apps based on the Twitter API, I was intrigued on how the service would work as well as supporting other developers. So I signed up. As was the protocol the contest company agreed to when I signed up. No more than 1 retweet. Needless to say, they screwed up big time. Because of the programmers not testing the….

Facebook Manners and You

Here is a great video on Facebook Manners – yes, it is hilarious but it does provide some good things to abide by. Especially the lingerie thing….

Thoughts on New Media for Non-Profits

We at Geek Girl are very proud of volunteering our time last Friday for a worthwhile event. Suffolk University, the renown Boston school, also has a Cape Cod extension where they put on some pretty cool programs for the locals. This particular event was about New Media for Non-Profits and it was infiltrated by about 150 non-profits, not-for-profits and charities all around Cape Cod and the South Shore. Us Geek Girls were the “Help Desk/Resource” for the event and we filled an incredibly important role in that we sat down face to face with many attendees who had questions on….

Oprah is on Twitter, Girlfriend!

Well, it was only a matter of time before the Queen of Daytime got her fingers on the keyboard to tweet to the world. And last Friday, Oprah, or as we call her in Twitterville, @Oprah , signed on to Twitter and the Internet has never been the same. Spurred on perhaps by the “Ashton Kutcher/ Larry King/Ding Dong Ditch Ted Turner” spectacle, the “O” was able to connect with all of us who have been here for years and perhaps felt we were free from celebrity and only for geeks. In less than one week, as I type this,….

Twitter Discovery Search: Search = Money

I am one of the fortunate subsets that has the new Twitter Discovery Search on my web-based Twitter profile to test out, and I am elated that Twitter has done this on their own homepage! Is that real-time search THAT important? You Bet. In a tweet this morning from someone I respect in the world of investment, especially in Internet companies, Howard Lindzon said,”Twitter is fun and all but it’s all about the search when it comes to money .” And he is right. At my web development company, data and search is huge in everything we build. Think of….

Protect Yourself Today against the Conficker Virus

Do you have a PC and are currenty using a Windows OS (Operating System), most notably XP or Vista? Then YOU need to pay close attention to what experts are saying about the Conficker Virus which they think will disrupt computers tomorrow on April Fool’s day, if not before. Experts are most worried about the ‘C’ variant of Conficker worm, aka Downadup or Kido, which infects Windows machines (XP and Vista) and disables them to get security updates or patches from Microsoft and from other vendors. The ‘B’ variant of the Conficker worm was causing problems in January of this….

What's This Follow Friday Thingie?

Since it is Friday and I am often asked what this “Follow Friday” thingie is, I thought I would just put up a quick post on Follow Friday, or as we denote this on Twitter as #followfriday. #followfriday is a fun sort of game/Twitter trend to engage people to follow your recommended users and assist others in finding new and interesting Tweeps, or Twitter Peeps. Tweeps are people with a mutual following. It follows the use of “Hashtags”, which are used to identify a “topic” on Twitter. You simply add # in front of what you want to identify as….
