The new annoying way to spam on Twitter and how to stop it

Originally posted on SocMedia101 Once again, we have a Twitter epidemic. Spam accounts post tweets asking for action or promoting their links and they include as many twitter handles as they can fit. The pick big name Tweeple and little ones. Their strategy is that we will see them because they included, for instance @writingroads, and so their tweet shows up in my @replies tab. Here’s what one of these spammer’s Twitter page looks like: What can we do to stop this? Aside from getting out the pitchforks (and violence is never the answer), we can report them as spam….

Julianne McLaughlin will be teaching workshops on: Podcasting – See all workshops here 1. How and when did you become a Geek Girl? I became a Geek Girl in 2008 when I attended the first Geek Girl Camp in Hyannis.  A good friend of mine, who is a web designer, suggested I attend the Cape Cod Boot Camp.   I had never known such a thing existed!  As I waited in line, I noticed young and young at heart chatting and exchanging pleasantries.  I immediately felt a sense of ease.  We all know that walking into a seminar surrounded by a….

Get stuck on Glue!

Author’s note: My past posts have been directed to social media applications and tools outside of the leading platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. My aim is to educate everyone on the many ways to connect with people outside just Twitter and Facebook, using diverse and interesting technologies and tools that everyone should try to be part of the conversation. You can then make a decision if it is something you want to use more of or not in your social media strategy or just for fun. You never know where that “connection” you make online turns out to be….

How to take a hit on your personal/company brand and come out on top

The other day on Twitter, I was following a friend who tweeted about a new contest service a web applications company made for a well known hotel chain. Because my day job involves running a web applications company that creates successful web apps based on the Twitter API, I was intrigued on how the service would work as well as supporting other developers. So I signed up. As was the protocol the contest company agreed to when I signed up. No more than 1 retweet. Needless to say, they screwed up big time. Because of the programmers not testing the….

Thoughts on New Media for Non-Profits

We at Geek Girl are very proud of volunteering our time last Friday for a worthwhile event. Suffolk University, the renown Boston school, also has a Cape Cod extension where they put on some pretty cool programs for the locals. This particular event was about New Media for Non-Profits and it was infiltrated by about 150 non-profits, not-for-profits and charities all around Cape Cod and the South Shore. Us Geek Girls were the “Help Desk/Resource” for the event and we filled an incredibly important role in that we sat down face to face with many attendees who had questions on….
