The Speakers

June Bertucci

President, Small Office Computer Support of Cape Cod, Geek Years: 23

June Bertucci started out in the banking industry working with Lotus 1.2.3, the precursor to Excel, in the early 80’s, then went on to run the computer operations for the sixth largest law firm in Boston. After relocating to Cape Cod June went to work for a hiring process management company that became part of Monster.com

June is currently the owner of Small Office Computer Support of Cape Cod, offering a full range of computer repair and services including: troubleshooting and installations of PCs, networks and servers, virus removal, software installations and upgrades as well as classroom and one-one training.

Julie Brooks

President, eCape, Inc., Geek Years: 14

Despite not knowing HTML or what the inside of a computer looks like, Julie has run eCape, Inc., one of the Cape’s largest website design and marketing companies, for 12 years. (Hey, the CEO of Ford doesn’t have to be a mechanic, right?)

Julie’s educational and career background in art history and art sales are completely irrelevent to the success of eCape and were probably a big waste of time. Despite growing up in two meccas of hipness-Missouri and Tennessee, Julie still thinks Cape Cod is a pretty cool place to live. eCape has only one purpose-to help every business and organization on Cape Cod succeed on the Internet by either building their website and/or getting them to advertise on one of the 3 highly trafficked regional portals operated by eCape.

Mom to a 9- and 7- year old and wife to a 45-year old, Julie lives in Brewster and enjoys pina coladas and getting caught in the rain.

Leslie Fishlock

President/CEO of Genevate, Founder of Geek Girl Camp, Geek Years: 36

Leslie is passionate about her company, the Internet, her iPhone, her Aussies and learning new geeky things. Leslie has been at the helm of Genevate, a company she and business partner and geeky boyfriend, Chris Corriveau started in 2002. (They are both still talking to each other.) Genevate is a professional web development, application and web services firm located on Cape Cod, but serving companies all over the US and abroad. Genevate specializes in standards compliant, Ruby on Rails design and development for SMBs (Small and Medium Businesses) and creating the sexiest web tools for CMS - Content Management Systems, Membership Management platforms for organizations, chambers, and associations, Social Networking frameworks, and ecommerce systems.

Prior to starting Genevate, Leslie worked for a slew of unexciting, boring, non-creative, dictatorial and Soviet Bloc-like companies with no real vision. We don’t mention them to protect them, as well as to avoid long and lengthy lawsuits. She is an avid online Social Networker, relies on the Internet for everything, and would rather IM than email any day. Yes, she is an admitted Tech Snob.

Leslie’s vision for education, evangelism, entrepreneurialism, and empowering women is apparent when you meet her, just don’t be afraid if she tends to talk 90 MPH and her arms start flailing with excitement; she is so proud of her dream of Geek Girl Camp becoming a reality.

Paula Hersey

Owner, Penguin Digital Design, Geek Years: 20+

Paula has the uncanny ability to communicate the most technologically complicated issues in “lay man’s terms’ and therefore has the talent to diminish the irrational fear people have of technology by making it user-friendly for them.

After many years of working for others in technology management, web design and portal development, Paula finally took the major step of opening her own business: Penguin Digital Design, a consulting firm specializing in creation of small business and non-profit client web sites including site, message, and database development, maintenance & tune-ups, Internet promotion, and report tracking. Workshop presenter on the importance of web sites in today’s business world.

Paula served on the board for the Community Leadership Institute, past president of American Business Women’s Association, and is active in several local Chambers. She serves as a Big Sister and is also a long time volunteer with the March of Dimes.

Janel Kesten

Graphic Designer, New England Reprographics, Geek Years: 10

Janel wasn’t always a geek girl. She took part in the first graphic design classes at Barnstable High School. This preparation was useful when she attended Savannah College of Art and Design where she received a BFA in graphic design. Janel came back to the Cape to work at New England Reprographics. Since then she’s expanded the services to a full offering of print design from logo to package design and everything in between.

To keep up with the ever-changing technology she frequents Macworld and Photoshop conferences. At those events she gains a renewed geekiness for all things Mac and Adobe. Janel is currently sharing her enthusiasm for design software in three evening classes at the Sandwich Community School.
