Ever Wondered What Happens When You Report Something on Facebook?

Have you ever reported anyone on Facebook or flagged some content that was inappropriate, rude, spammy, racist, etc.?

Ever wondered what happens once you do decide to click “Report” on Facebook? Here is a bureaucratic…errr….easy-to-use guide that will provide you with more information into Facebook’s reporting process.

First of all, there is a process. Facebook responds to hundreds of reports of questionable content – in 24 languages – and is in operation around the world, 24 hours looking into these complaints.

Facebook has a User Operations group (UO) and they separate the reporting into four teams to review report types; the Safety team, the Hate and Harassment team, the Access team, and the Abusive Content team. When someone categorizes the report, it goes to one of these teams.

If any reported content violates Facebook’s policies or their Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, they will remove it and warn the person who posted it. They could also revoke a user’s ability to share particular types of content or use certain features and/or disable a user’s account. Extreme cases are referred to law enforcement to handle. And, just like our court system in the US, there is another team that deals with the appeal process.

If there is content that clearly violates Facebook’s Community Standards , it will be removed. However, Facebook started last year a social reporting tool where you can reach out to other users and try to mediate and resolve issues. Not sure how that has worked out, but it is definitely good to know Facebook wants you to solve your own problems.

In addition, Facebook recently launched their Support Dashboard which allows you to keep track of these reports so you can see how they are resolved.

In short, Facebook does have a process for reporting and albeit a lengthy one, I am glad they have a process because I never really knew if it was an automated serviice or if there were actual carbon-based kife forms behind it.

It’s good to know Facebook is taking things seriously and if you find that content on your profile, your company page or anyone else’s profile or page is offensive, at least you now know how to take care of it and how Facebook responds.

So, has anyone here ever reported anyone before? What kind of circumstance was it and how did that pan out?
