Yes, Facebook Sucks Sometimes…but there's a Silver Lining…

Just when they thought no one was looking, BAM! Facebook made another permissions snafu. They changed everyone’s email address to Facebook specific emails and posted them on your timeline. Though an easy fix, it just makes you wonder why the hell they just keeping doing sneaky stuff like this…(If you answered, “because they can” – Ding Ding Ding! You win the toaster oven!)

HOW TO FIX THE FACEBOOK EMAIL DEBACLE OF 2012…
If you have not fixed it yet, it takes literally 2 minutes.
  1. Click “About” on your profile and scroll down to your email address. Click “Edit” to change them.
  2. Click on the circle next to your Facebook email address and change its setting to “Hidden From Timeline”.
  3. Click on the circle next to your other email addresses and change their settings to “Shown On Timeline”.
  4. Click the Save button at the bottom of the Edit popup (Don’t forget this step).

THEN – just when I thought I could not hate Facebook anymore than I did….they did this…
Aaaarrrgghhhh….must…now….like….Facebook. Again.

Yes, it a wonderful thing.
Yes, it is long overdue.
Yes, it is what Geek Girl stands for and we won’t rest until there are more women in tech. She is the first woman on the previously all male-dominated board at Facebook.  She is also one of the very few women on any boards in Silicon Valley. Hoo-freaking-ray.
So now I must suck up my love-hate Facebook relationship because a sistuh done good. That’s okay. I’ll take the small victories any day…

Ever Wondered What Happens When You Report Something on Facebook?

Have you ever reported anyone on Facebook or flagged some content that was inappropriate, rude, spammy, racist, etc.?

Ever wondered what happens once you do decide to click “Report” on Facebook? Here is a bureaucratic…errr….easy-to-use guide that will provide you with more information into Facebook’s reporting process.

First of all, there is a process. Facebook responds to hundreds of reports of questionable content – in 24 languages – and is in operation around the world, 24 hours looking into these complaints.

Facebook has a User Operations group (UO) and they separate the reporting into four teams to review report types; the Safety team, the Hate and Harassment team, the Access team, and the Abusive Content team. When someone categorizes the report, it goes to one of these teams.

If any reported content violates Facebook’s policies or their Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, they will remove it and warn the person who posted it. They could also revoke a user’s ability to share particular types of content or use certain features and/or disable a user’s account. Extreme cases are referred to law enforcement to handle. And, just like our court system in the US, there is another team that deals with the appeal process.

If there is content that clearly violates Facebook’s Community Standards , it will be removed. However, Facebook started last year a social reporting tool where you can reach out to other users and try to mediate and resolve issues. Not sure how that has worked out, but it is definitely good to know Facebook wants you to solve your own problems.

In addition, Facebook recently launched their Support Dashboard which allows you to keep track of these reports so you can see how they are resolved.

In short, Facebook does have a process for reporting and albeit a lengthy one, I am glad they have a process because I never really knew if it was an automated serviice or if there were actual carbon-based kife forms behind it.

It’s good to know Facebook is taking things seriously and if you find that content on your profile, your company page or anyone else’s profile or page is offensive, at least you now know how to take care of it and how Facebook responds.

So, has anyone here ever reported anyone before? What kind of circumstance was it and how did that pan out?

Facebook Updates Page Admin Roles

Up until now, if you assigned Admin status to someone on your Facebook page, they had the ability to do everything. Now Facebook has made each admin have roles that you can choose. This new feature was announced at the Facebook Marketing Conference in February of this year and was just announced today, so try it out!

All Page admins can now have a different role assigned to them, depending on what area they are focusing on. Page admins now can have 5 different roles, each with different abilities: Manager, Content Creator, Moderator, Advertiser, and Insights Analyst. Only managers can change what kind of admin someone is.

All admins are managers by default and there is no limit to the number of admins a Page can have.

Simply go to your Admin Panel -> Edit Page- > click Admin Roles- > adjust your Admins according to how you want your Admins to operate or what you want them in charge of.

Word of Advice: Pages should always have a minimum of at least two Admins for safety and protection, not to mention efficiency if the main Admin is not around. Consider delegating. I believe we have 7 at Geek Girl…so we are totally prepared!

More info on Page Admins can be found here: Page Admins

Please pass this on to let everyone know how flexible these options are now for Page Admins!

Introducing…Heather "Action" Jackson: Marketing Maven, Monkey Dancer and Sinatra Breakfast Buddy

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Heather Jackson and I do the monkey dance. I also own 2 marketing businesses, Hammerhead Creatives and ActionJackson Marketing. Hammerhead Creatives specializes in custom logo’d apparel and promo products- aka SWAG like the sweet thermal bags you get at the conference. Through ActionJackson Marketing I provide e-mail newsletter marketing services including presentations to businesses and associations as well as individualized training and campaign management. As an Authorized Local Field Expert for Constant Contact, I am able to offer extended services and expertise.

What will you be teaching at the Geek Girl Tech Conference this year?

Sick of spam? (Who isn’t?!?!) Want to make sure your customers don’t think your e-mails are spam? (and thus delete them.) I will be teaching you how to create, write and manage your e-mail newsletter marketing campaigns so that you can be sure your e-mails are opened, read and impactful. Topics of discussion include best practices, tips & trends, how to improve your open/click/share rates, writing killer subject lines and analyzing result. E-mail marketing is extremely powerful if done the right way. I will also be available to answer any general marketing questions as marketing is my passion.

What was your favorite part of the conference last year?

The help desk is an amazing resource- to get 1 on 1 training and actually come away with something concrete is awesome. Then of course I loved the post party.

PC or Mac?

oohh…just switched to a Mac and having some growing pains (I need GGC help!) but love the intuitiveness of it…but I love my Android that let’s me run my business anywhere.

When did you first know you were geeky?

When I wrapped a Geek Girl Coozie around a tasty beverage.

Star Wars or Star Trek?

Starfish. As a native Californian, I’d way rather be in the ocean than in the theatre. I have not missed a polar plunge in 10 years and swam every month in 2010 in Nantucket Sound (yeah- that was on a bet.) There’s a good chance I am part mermaid.

Choose 5 people from any moment of time to have dinner and drinks with. Who would they be and why?

Margaret Sanger – hugely courageous and impactful. Among her great accomplishments, her newsletter was entitled The Woman Rebel: “No Gods, No Masters.” I love bad ass women.

Stephen Colbert- There is nothing better than hanging out with smart & funny people; I put a premium on laughter. Stephen makes me laugh out loud daily; also I like to be with people who clearly love what they do (and are good at it.)

Babe Didrikson Zaharias – fellow Norwegian and amazing athlete. A world class track & field and basketball star, she was best known for her golf prowess (she was the first female to compete in The LA Open, a mens’ PGA event, in 1938, a feat unmatched for 60 years.) Babe was also an accomplished seamstress, harmonica player and pool shark; I am sure she was funny too.

Neil Diamond – if you’ve ever been to one of his shows, you’d know why. Give me some of that unbuttoned purple glitter shirt, a big bad American flag and sing me Forever in Blue Jeans or anything else. (Note: he did point directly at me and sing “I’m a Believer” in San Francisco, 1993, seat 1G; heaven in a 5 color silk shirt and black stirrup stretch pants.)

Our Hound, Miller- I’d love to know what she is really thinking (I think) and how she stays so patient and sweet in spite of all our antics. She probably has some good cat jokes too.

Who do feel has had the most impact on technology in your time?

Tough to go with other than Steve Jobs don’t you think? Product, strategy, branding…best in all areas. If my mom thinks an iPhone is the bees knees (and she can operate it) what more can you say.

Facebook or Twitter?

Facebook as long as I don’t fall into the vortex…but I do try to put my phone away when I am out with friends as they deserve my full attention.

Tell us something about you nobody knows….

When I was 10 my grandfather was President of the Tournament of Roses and in addition to riding in the parade on an antique fire truck, I got to have breakfast and even say grace with Grand Marshall Frank Sinatra (yes his eyes are really blue.)
