How to Find and Adjust your Social Media Privacy Settings Quickly

Granted, this isn’t anything ground-breaking or earth-shattering, but it is nice to know there is a site you can go to that finds the Privacy Settings on all your Social Media accounts so you can make any changes quickly. Sometimes the pages that contain the information on how to adjust your settings can be deeply embedded on a Social Media site and it take a good portion of time to find it.

With AdjustYourPrivacy.com, you can click on to any of the Social Media icons you use, and it will bring you right to that area.

Quick links to your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube et al, will certainly help you just get their faster; especially if the situation arises when you have to do it fast because you’ve been compromised.

This is just another great shortcut tip that will help you as the Privacy issues surrounding Social Media just keep getting more pervasive in our lives whenever we are using social networking sites.

Anyone finding this useful to you?

Enjoy!

How many of your Twitter followers are fake?

And so it is upon us. Another 4 years later and the nation is in yet another frenzy over who will be our next President.

And who would have thought 8 years ago some of the biggest headlines would be about which President has more fake Twitter followers? Mashable states Obama has 13 million fake followers out of his 19 million followers, much more than Romney’s 900,000 followers of which 135,000 are fake.

Welcome to the New Media Age. Where you’re not only graded on your ability, but by your clout and Twitter follower count. Or fake ones, as it is in this case.

So how does one find their Twitter fakes?

There is a site call Fake Followers by StatusPeople which will integrate with your Twitter account to find your fake followers. Don’t think you have any? Well, let’s mosey on over to the site and see if you do.

First, go to the Fake Followers site, http://fakers.statuspeople.com

Put in your Twitter handle so they can use your data with their system.

We put in our @GeekGirlCamp account and found out the following, which was pretty good – only 2% were fake. Which is pretty good. But then, we’re not running for office.

So, this brings us to the real question; does these even matter at all?

I guess you could say that if you think Twitter is influential in determining the engagement, clout, authenticity and likability of a brand or person such as the President, then yes, I guess this does matter.

If you are from the other camp who believes this means nothing but some mumbo jumbo numbers based upon one social networking site known for multiple accounts and fake identities, then you are right, also.

Whatever the case, analytics and ways of measuring our social media scores and influence is vitally important for brands and this is only the beginning of measuring you or your brands influence.

What are your thoughts on this? How many fake followers do you have?

What is the Secret to the Perfect Facebook Post?

SalesForce.com thinks they have the answer in this image. What do you think?

Many brands today are posting on Facebook as a means of connecting with their customers and prospects. However, very few have mastered the basics such as the ideal post length, use of imagery, use of color and linking. When used correctly, these small improvements will add up to increased engagement on your posts and extend the viral reach of your messages.

So, what makes a perfect Facebook post? Let this blueprint be your guide.” – Read more on this SalesForce.com Blog Post.

How to "Hide" a Person from your Facebook News Feed; without Unfriending Them

Now and again, you find one of your Facebook friends just driving you crazy and you just need to limit their News Feed without deleting them. This is an easy thing to do to “hide” their News Feed, as well as reverse it and once again receive their feeds. All without them even knowing.

We shall use my friend and fellow Geek Girl Maura Longueil of Abbey Knoll Photography. Maura has done nothing wrong, and I don’t really want to silence her news about her kids (because they are so darn cute) and pictures of martinis (because they are so darn cute), but because she is a good sport, we shall use her for this exercise.

First, make sure you are in your News Feed. You can do this by clicking the Facebook logo in your top left corner or just going into the left side navigation where it says “News Feed”.

Take your mouse hover it over the person’s name you want to hide in your news feed. You will see a pop-up, find where it says “Friend” button. There is also a matching friend button on their profile timeline where you can go. From this pop-up simply uncheck the “Show in News Feed” option. This will now allow you to still keep them as a friend, but not in your News Feed.

Maybe you made a mistake and now want them back? That’s easy, too!

Again, click on “Facebook” to ensure you are in your news feed or just going into the left side navigation where it says “News Feed”.

While in the left sidebar, hover your mouse to the right of the word “News Feed”. An icon that looks like a pencil will appear. Click on that and a drop-down will open. Where it says “Edit Settings”, click that. You will be brought to the “Edit News Feed Settings” window. In the settings menu, locate the friend you hid, and they should automatically appear. Choose the “X” to the right of their name to unhide them. Don’t forget to Save your Settings!

There you go. Easy, fast and your friend may never know it happened.

Yes, Facebook Sucks Sometimes…but there's a Silver Lining…

Just when they thought no one was looking, BAM! Facebook made another permissions snafu. They changed everyone’s email address to Facebook specific emails and posted them on your timeline. Though an easy fix, it just makes you wonder why the hell they just keeping doing sneaky stuff like this…(If you answered, “because they can” – Ding Ding Ding! You win the toaster oven!)

HOW TO FIX THE FACEBOOK EMAIL DEBACLE OF 2012…
If you have not fixed it yet, it takes literally 2 minutes.
  1. Click “About” on your profile and scroll down to your email address. Click “Edit” to change them.
  2. Click on the circle next to your Facebook email address and change its setting to “Hidden From Timeline”.
  3. Click on the circle next to your other email addresses and change their settings to “Shown On Timeline”.
  4. Click the Save button at the bottom of the Edit popup (Don’t forget this step).

THEN – just when I thought I could not hate Facebook anymore than I did….they did this…
Aaaarrrgghhhh….must…now….like….Facebook. Again.

Yes, it a wonderful thing.
Yes, it is long overdue.
Yes, it is what Geek Girl stands for and we won’t rest until there are more women in tech. She is the first woman on the previously all male-dominated board at Facebook.  She is also one of the very few women on any boards in Silicon Valley. Hoo-freaking-ray.
So now I must suck up my love-hate Facebook relationship because a sistuh done good. That’s okay. I’ll take the small victories any day…

Facebook Updates Page Admin Roles

Up until now, if you assigned Admin status to someone on your Facebook page, they had the ability to do everything. Now Facebook has made each admin have roles that you can choose. This new feature was announced at the Facebook Marketing Conference in February of this year and was just announced today, so try it out!

All Page admins can now have a different role assigned to them, depending on what area they are focusing on. Page admins now can have 5 different roles, each with different abilities: Manager, Content Creator, Moderator, Advertiser, and Insights Analyst. Only managers can change what kind of admin someone is.

All admins are managers by default and there is no limit to the number of admins a Page can have.

Simply go to your Admin Panel -> Edit Page- > click Admin Roles- > adjust your Admins according to how you want your Admins to operate or what you want them in charge of.

Word of Advice: Pages should always have a minimum of at least two Admins for safety and protection, not to mention efficiency if the main Admin is not around. Consider delegating. I believe we have 7 at Geek Girl…so we are totally prepared!

More info on Page Admins can be found here: Page Admins

Please pass this on to let everyone know how flexible these options are now for Page Admins!
