Angry Birds Star Wars is in a Galaxy Near You! Today!

If I could mention two of my favorite things, one would have to be Star Wars and the other Angry Birds. And now they are together in the latest Rovio game!

Angry Birds Star Wars is out TODAY, November 8th, on iPhone, iPad, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows Phone and Windows 8 – not sure on Chrome yet.

The coolest part is, the birds are made to look like famous Star Wars icons. Red Bird stars as young Jedi Luke Skywalker. There is a Han Solo bird, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, C3PO, R2D2 and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Angry Birds are the Rebels and the Bad Piggies are the Empire.

Complete with…Pig-Troopers! With a very piggy Darth Vader.

1 billion people can’t be wrong. The Angry Birds franchise is not only fun for everyone, but extremely popular and has been very successful for the 3 nerds from Finland.

If anyone wants me, I’ll just be down under my desk doing some…uh…research…

How many of your Twitter followers are fake?

And so it is upon us. Another 4 years later and the nation is in yet another frenzy over who will be our next President.

And who would have thought 8 years ago some of the biggest headlines would be about which President has more fake Twitter followers? Mashable states Obama has 13 million fake followers out of his 19 million followers, much more than Romney’s 900,000 followers of which 135,000 are fake.

Welcome to the New Media Age. Where you’re not only graded on your ability, but by your clout and Twitter follower count. Or fake ones, as it is in this case.

So how does one find their Twitter fakes?

There is a site call Fake Followers by StatusPeople which will integrate with your Twitter account to find your fake followers. Don’t think you have any? Well, let’s mosey on over to the site and see if you do.

First, go to the Fake Followers site, http://fakers.statuspeople.com

Put in your Twitter handle so they can use your data with their system.

We put in our @GeekGirlCamp account and found out the following, which was pretty good – only 2% were fake. Which is pretty good. But then, we’re not running for office.

So, this brings us to the real question; does these even matter at all?

I guess you could say that if you think Twitter is influential in determining the engagement, clout, authenticity and likability of a brand or person such as the President, then yes, I guess this does matter.

If you are from the other camp who believes this means nothing but some mumbo jumbo numbers based upon one social networking site known for multiple accounts and fake identities, then you are right, also.

Whatever the case, analytics and ways of measuring our social media scores and influence is vitally important for brands and this is only the beginning of measuring you or your brands influence.

What are your thoughts on this? How many fake followers do you have?

Who is Excited About Google Fiber?

Who wouldn’t be?

Google Fiber just launched today its new 1 gigabit residential fiber network in Kansas City, MO. Internet and HDTV, folks. The network will deliver 1 gigabit connections to homes all over the city. And if you don’t think THAT is fast, then consider it is about 100 times faster than most current residential broadband connections found in the US right now.

This graph really needs no explanation, but it does show how Internet speeds in the US are just not keeping up with all the technology we are throwing on it. We simply need faster speeds to handle the new technology and all the content we want quickly.

Google states that there will not be any overage charges or caps, it will come with 1 terabyte of cloud storage and HDTV. Kansas City residents will have to pay a $300 connection fee to get the service installed in their homes, and the monthly prices are anywhere from the basic with free Internet for nothing per month, just the $300 construction fee (one time or $25/mo for 12 mo), 1 gigabit Internet for $70 per month (waive the $300 connection fee) or you can have the 1 gigabit Internet and tv for $120 a month.

Although if you are looking for Breaking Bad, Mad Men and The Walking Dead, AMC is not included on the tv lineup as of yet, along with CNN and ESPN.

The network box is similar to Apple TV and you can use your Nexus 7 tablet as the remote.

Final Reminder: Check your Computer for DNSChanger (or No Facebook or Twitter on Monday For You!)

Are you seeing GREEN when you click this link? DNSChanger Check-up

If you are, you are fine. If you see RED, then let’s take these steps to correct it. And it is not too hard to do.

We’ve mentioned this several times this past year, but it’s worth repeating since the final plug is coming July 9th:

Check Your Computer For DNSChanger or you may not have Internet on Monday. No Facebook or Twitter. No fluffy bunny videos. No Farmville.

Here are some FAQs to help you understand this better on why you should take immediate action:
What is DNSChanger?

DNSChanger is a worldwide malware scam perpetrated by some sleazy scammers out to make money on the misfortunes of others. Back in 2007, these nasty folks decided to let loose some malware that if it enters your computer, could infect your computer’s DNS settings. There were seven men behind the DNSChanger scam and they supposedly managed to extort about $14 million before being arrested late last year. Their scam was easy: when you attempt to surf the web, you will be re-routed to fraudulent sites instead. And they racked up a lot of money doing so. Even nastier, DNSChanger also prevents infected computers from allowing sites where you can download antivirus and OS security updates so you can clean everything up. Users affected with DNSChanger can still get online but they will have a different view then everyone else.

Why didn’t the “plug” just get yanked when the men who were responsible got caught?

Supposedly, the FBI and Germany’s Information Security Agency made some adjustments to the malware and continued running it because of the sheer number of people who would’ve been affected by pulling the plug.

What does DNS mean?

DNS stands for: Domain Name System. It’s basically a system for computers to connect to the Internet through an IP (Internet Protocol) address. The Domain Name Service uses queries to translate a URL into an IP address to locate computers, mobile phones, servers or any other devices any where in the world. Whenever you are sending email or browsing to your favorite website, you are using the Internet’s DNS, which then queries your IP address, which is a series of numbers your computer the  translates so you can see what it is you are sending or searching.

Why should I be checking my computer for DNSChanger

Your computer could be affected. The FBI believes almost 300,000 computers will be infected. 70,000 alone in the USA.

What happens if I get a red screen and have the malware?

How to "Hide" a Person from your Facebook News Feed; without Unfriending Them

Now and again, you find one of your Facebook friends just driving you crazy and you just need to limit their News Feed without deleting them. This is an easy thing to do to “hide” their News Feed, as well as reverse it and once again receive their feeds. All without them even knowing.

We shall use my friend and fellow Geek Girl Maura Longueil of Abbey Knoll Photography. Maura has done nothing wrong, and I don’t really want to silence her news about her kids (because they are so darn cute) and pictures of martinis (because they are so darn cute), but because she is a good sport, we shall use her for this exercise.

First, make sure you are in your News Feed. You can do this by clicking the Facebook logo in your top left corner or just going into the left side navigation where it says “News Feed”.

Take your mouse hover it over the person’s name you want to hide in your news feed. You will see a pop-up, find where it says “Friend” button. There is also a matching friend button on their profile timeline where you can go. From this pop-up simply uncheck the “Show in News Feed” option. This will now allow you to still keep them as a friend, but not in your News Feed.

Maybe you made a mistake and now want them back? That’s easy, too!

Again, click on “Facebook” to ensure you are in your news feed or just going into the left side navigation where it says “News Feed”.

While in the left sidebar, hover your mouse to the right of the word “News Feed”. An icon that looks like a pencil will appear. Click on that and a drop-down will open. Where it says “Edit Settings”, click that. You will be brought to the “Edit News Feed Settings” window. In the settings menu, locate the friend you hid, and they should automatically appear. Choose the “X” to the right of their name to unhide them. Don’t forget to Save your Settings!

There you go. Easy, fast and your friend may never know it happened.
