What Will Happen to Your Facebook Account When You Pass Away?

No one wants to die thinking about what is going to happen to their Facebook account, right? Pretty morbid, huh?

FortRosecransLeslieFishlock

Well, that may not be the first thing on our minds, but much like a will, we should be thinking about what should happen to our online accounts when we do pass on. I remember a few years ago when a connection on Facebook had passed and their profile was still going strong. It made me feel sad that there was no way for friends and family members to either delete or memorialize the profile without having access to the account. Facebook must have been listening. The older and bigger Facebook gets, not to mention the rapid increase of baby boomers online, it was only a matter of time before they did it.

Facebook just released guidelines for when you are pushing daisies and makes it easier for your family, business and even Facebook itself from sending notifications for eternity. Unless you are Miss Cleo, I don’t think you will be picking up any urgent updates on the Grammys from beyond the grave.

You can now tell Facebook in advance whether you’d like to have your account memorialized or permanently deleted from Facebook. Here’s how:

Memorialized Accounts

Memorialized accounts are a place for friends and family to gather and share memories after a person has passed away. Memorialized accounts have the following key features:

  • The word Remembering will be shown next to the person’s name on their profile
  • Depending on the privacy settings of the account, friends can share memories on the memorialized Timeline
  • Content the person shared (ex: photos, posts) stays on Facebook and is visible to the audience it was shared with
  • Memorialized profiles don’t appear in public spaces such as in suggestions for People You May Know, ads or birthday reminders
  • No one can log into a memorialized account
  • Memorialized accounts that don’t have a legacy contact can’t be changed
  • Groups with an admin whose account was memorialized will be able to select new admins
  • Pages with a sole admin whose account was memorialized will be removed from Facebook if we receive a valid request

Deleting Your Account

You can choose to have your account permanently deleted should you pass away. To do this:

  1. From the top right of Facebook, click and select Settings
  2. From the left menu, click Security
  3. Click Legacy Contact
  4. Click have your account permanently deleted and follow the on-screen instructions

For Friends and Family

If you’d like to create an additional place for people on Facebook to share memories of your loved one, we suggest creating a group.

Learn how to request the memorialization of an account or how to request the removal of a deceased person’s account from Facebook.

My iPhone Can Do That?

My iPhone really is amazing. I thank Holy Thor every day for the ability to be mobile without lugging around a laptop wherever I go.

And every day I am learning more things I can do on it. Like this little nugget.

Siri can tell me what planes are flying over my head. Really. I know this might not sound too awesome to some of you, but my office is in the flight path of San Diego’s Lindbergh Field which is the busiest commercial airport in the United States with only one runway, and the second-busiest single-use runway in the world next to London’s Gatwick. So a lot of planes fly over. And I love it. I used to use just my hearing and memory to determine which one is a Boeing 737 or that old freaking DC10 that I think FedEx still uses.

But now Siri has made it even better and here is how you can find out.

Ask Siri, “Siri what planes are flying overhead?”

BOOM. All you need to know.

Nonprofits: Increase Your #GivingTuesday Fundraising with a Custom Branded Image

Nonprofits: Want to be seen and heard today? Need a fast and easy way to capture everyone’s attention on #GivingTuesday‬ for your own fundraising efforts?

Download this Word file from Nonprofit Toolkit and simply add your logo, message and URL to maximize your giving season!

IrisCreative_GivingTuesday-1011x1024

It’s fast, it’s easy, and it really stands out from the others with a customized image with your logo.

How do you do it?

How to customize your own #GivingTuesday social graphic from Nonprofit Toolkit:

  1. Download their file. It’s a Microsoft Word document, compatible with Word 2007-2013 by going here: http://www.nonprofittoolkit.net/2013/11/28/givingtuesday/.
  2. Add your logo. A PNG or a JPG file will work best. To add your logo right-click on the placeholder (where it says ‘insert logo here’) and click “Change Picture”. Or you can just delete it and add your logo. You might need to change the formatting to get it to show up in the right space.
  3. Edit the text in the middle, or just add the name of your organization, group or school.
  4. Add your donation link. Be direct and send people straight to the donation page rather than the home page. The link will not actually be clickable, so when you post the image add a text update/status as well and repeat the link, so readers can click through.
  5. Convert to an image. To convert the Word document to an image is a simple two-step process: Save as a PDF file, then open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat or your image editor. Resave as a jpeg and you are ready to post to your website or your favorite social network.

To show you how easy it is, we just made a quick one for our friends at the National Marine Life Center:

NMLCGivingTuesday

NOTE: we did not add the actual giving URL due to it’s length, but what we did do was make this image clickable to the giving page: https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/NationalMarineLifeCenter

What are your plans for #GivingTuesday?

Many thanks to Beth Brodovsky at Nonprofit Toolkit for making this so easy for everyone!

The Value of Women in Startups

Some things to note: Women earn more than 50% of all bachelor’s and master’s degrees,  nearly half of all doctorates, yet under 3% start technology companies and even less on management teams. We’re changing this, but we need more ladies involved. Get involved!

Angry Birds Star Wars is in a Galaxy Near You! Today!

If I could mention two of my favorite things, one would have to be Star Wars and the other Angry Birds. And now they are together in the latest Rovio game!

Angry Birds Star Wars is out TODAY, November 8th, on iPhone, iPad, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows Phone and Windows 8 – not sure on Chrome yet.

The coolest part is, the birds are made to look like famous Star Wars icons. Red Bird stars as young Jedi Luke Skywalker. There is a Han Solo bird, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, C3PO, R2D2 and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Angry Birds are the Rebels and the Bad Piggies are the Empire.

Complete with…Pig-Troopers! With a very piggy Darth Vader.

1 billion people can’t be wrong. The Angry Birds franchise is not only fun for everyone, but extremely popular and has been very successful for the 3 nerds from Finland.

If anyone wants me, I’ll just be down under my desk doing some…uh…research…

How many of your Twitter followers are fake?

And so it is upon us. Another 4 years later and the nation is in yet another frenzy over who will be our next President.

And who would have thought 8 years ago some of the biggest headlines would be about which President has more fake Twitter followers? Mashable states Obama has 13 million fake followers out of his 19 million followers, much more than Romney’s 900,000 followers of which 135,000 are fake.

Welcome to the New Media Age. Where you’re not only graded on your ability, but by your clout and Twitter follower count. Or fake ones, as it is in this case.

So how does one find their Twitter fakes?

There is a site call Fake Followers by StatusPeople which will integrate with your Twitter account to find your fake followers. Don’t think you have any? Well, let’s mosey on over to the site and see if you do.

First, go to the Fake Followers site, http://fakers.statuspeople.com

Put in your Twitter handle so they can use your data with their system.

We put in our @GeekGirlCamp account and found out the following, which was pretty good – only 2% were fake. Which is pretty good. But then, we’re not running for office.

So, this brings us to the real question; does these even matter at all?

I guess you could say that if you think Twitter is influential in determining the engagement, clout, authenticity and likability of a brand or person such as the President, then yes, I guess this does matter.

If you are from the other camp who believes this means nothing but some mumbo jumbo numbers based upon one social networking site known for multiple accounts and fake identities, then you are right, also.

Whatever the case, analytics and ways of measuring our social media scores and influence is vitally important for brands and this is only the beginning of measuring you or your brands influence.

What are your thoughts on this? How many fake followers do you have?

Frayed Apple Adapter? How you can Replace it

Example of a "T" style MPM MagSafe Adapter which exhibits a strain relief issue, above.

Apple Fans, good news!

If you have a frayed or “strain relief” adapter, Apple has updated their program on how to replace your cord. Their website details how Apple’s Adapter Replacement Program works, and specifically notes what strain relief is and looks like and offers its Resolution Policy on how to obtain a replacement adapter.

The page on Apple’s site goes on to explain what you must do to replace your cord:

Whether your product is in or out of warranty, you can take your adapter to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store for evaluation and replacement if necessary. Pending the results of evaluation, you may or may not be eligible for a replacement adapter free of charge. Signs of accidental damage would negate any coverage. Be sure to bring in the computer used with the adapter; it is required to process potential adapter replacements.

I personally have never had a fraying problem, but if you have had any issues with one of your Mac power cords, read over the instructions and get to your local Apple store immediately and get that cord replaced! It’s great to know you can replace one this easily.
